Boys & Girls Clubs chair steps down

Erin Riley-Downing, board chair for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley, has resigned will stepping down from her position and resign from the board effective March 1.

Downing’s decision comes four months prior to her term ending and is based on personal factors, including a move from Sonoma to Napa, the enrollment of her daughter in school there, and her husband’s retirement.

“It is with mixed emotion that I leave the board,” he said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a capable and talented group of people and I am incredibly proud of the changes we make in the lives of our members every day.”

Robert Hughes, president and CEO, said, “All of us at Boys & Girls Clubs Sonoma Valley are grateful to Erin for her years of service and are thrilled she will be staying on and participating in various BGCSV committees.”

The incoming chair is Dub Hay, who has served on the board for three years. He is retired senior vice president for Global Coffee Authority.

Downing’s contributions over the past years have been crucial to the advancement of BGCSV, Hughes said. Through her efforts, The Club, the dedicated facility for teen members, has become a valuable and permanent asset of the community. Teen participation has doubled since its opening, and a higher percentage of participants are attending college.

The Sweetheart Gala & Auction, BGCSV’s most important fundraiser, has become more successful each year since Downing joined the event team, Hughes said. The success of the Gala can be measured in increased sponsorships, higher attendance, and significantly increased income.

“Erin has led the board to set and achieve higher goals in all areas,” Hughes said. “She has inspired staff leadership to develop new programs to attract more members. Her successful fundraising efforts have ensured these programs will continue. She pledged to continue serving the organization she has so capably led.”
