Years before directing the sweeping spectacles “Bridge on the River Kwai” and “Lawrence of Arabia,” David Lean, in the 1946 film “Great Expectations,” focused on characters finely drawn by Charles Dickens. Nominated for Best Picture, it stars Alec Guinness, John Miles, Martita Hunt as the mansion-bound spinster Miss Havisham — a character that Lean said prefigured Norma Desmond of “Sunset Boulevard — and the exquisitely cruel Jean Simmons.
