In 1931, Charlie Chaplin, for years the biggest movie star in the world, was suddenly on the wrong side of history – without a microphone. Talkies had taken over Hollywood three years earlier, but Chaplin insisted that the voice of his Tramp persona never be heard, so he bucked the trend with another silent film, “City Lights.” Always the obsessive auteur, Chaplin wanted the recorded music to be just right, so he wrote the score.

At an outdoor screening on Saturday, June 24, Chaplin’s musical soundtrack will be played live, by the Sonoma County Philharmonic. The film begins at sundown at the Gundlach Bundschu Winery, 2000 Denmark St. in Sonoma.

$75, general seating in open-air amphitheater. Wine and food truck on site. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Blankets or low back chair OK; but no coolers, pets, or outside food or drink.
