The Visual Arts Scene for September

ArtEscape

Through September 29: “Springs Creative” exhibition by Sonoma Valley artists.

Through October 13: Thanks to a grant provided by The Creative Sonoma Arts Response Grants for Organizations, ArtEscape produced a series of collaborative art and writing events in recognition of the community’s resilience and spirit. Painted birdhouses and written notes will be displayed in front of ArtEscape on Highway 12, then distributed during a celebration on October 13 from 5 to 7. September’s events of this project are: September 8, 2 to 4; September 15, 10 to 12; September 21, 6:30 to 8:30.

September 4, 11, 18, 25: “Art Sprout”, a child-adult arts program for ages two to four, made possible by a grant from Sonoma County Vintners Foundation.

September 13, 5:30 to 9:30: “Encaustic Studio” with Susan Heeringa-Pieper.

Many other classes available, including Teen Art Lounge, Grandparents Day and oil painting.

Arts Guild of Sonoma

Through October 1: Exhibition of the National Juried Show participants in “Art in an Age of Anxiety”. Coined in 1948, anxiety is not contained in the past. Artists seek to chronicle, illuminate and cope with the perils of our era. Opening reception September 1 from 5 to 7:30.

September 6: Participating in “Sonoma Art Walk” from 5:30 to 7:30, free to the public. Check website for full details.

Sonoma Art Walk

 September 6: Monthly First Thursday evening art walks begin, 5:30 to 7:30. This is a partnership between Arts Guild of Sonoma, Chamber of Commerce, City of Sonoma, Sonoma Community Center and Sonoma Valley Visitors Bureau. All free to the public. Future art walks are on October 4 and November 1.

Sonoma Community Center

Continuing: Figure Arts Open Studio: weekly drop-in classes, uninstructed life-drawing sessions to draw or paint from a live model, Monday evenings 6:00 to 8:30, or Tuesday mornings 10:00 to 12:30. 

Many other classes in all mediums, including soda firing and glazing, monoprinting with clay, hand-built pottery, and an artist lecture series.

September 6: Participating in Sonoma Art Walk 5:30 to 7:30, free to the public.

September 8 and 15: Paper Mache Mask Making workshop with Ernesto Hernandez-Olmos, 1 to 3.

September 29: Opening of “Sonoma Fire Stories” event, 6 to 8.

Sonoma Plein Air

festival-visitorsCelebrating its 16th anniversary in the Plaza, 35 nationally renowned artists paint outdoors, and show their paintings through September 15:

September 11: Quick Draw, 5 to 7. Artists produce one work of art which is available immediately for sale.

September 11-14, 12 to 6: Select studio paintings by the Plein Air artists exhibited at Bump Cellars, 521 Broadway.

September 15: Exhibition in the Plaza of all works produced during the week. Artist demos, art activities for all ages, and live music, 10 to 4.

 

Sonoma Valley Museum of Art

Through September 16: “Private Landscapes and Public Territories: Botanicals, Archives and Libraries in the Work of Amalia Mesa-Bains.”  Themes of family geographies and historical displacement are represented in border maps, archival images and native plants.

Continuing in September: “Natural Affinity: California Women Sculptors in the Landscape,” a public art installation in the Sonoma Plaza through October 21. Free tours from the art museum beginning at 11:45 on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

 September featured artist: Loretta Loy-Adair, oil painter, in the Museum store.

September 7: Arte y Música de la Tierra, annual Art Night with art making tables, music and food, 6 to 9. Members $25, non-members $35.

Norma Quintana_FFF edit#21September 29, 6 to 8: Opening reception of 20 Sonoma Collectors: Celebrating SVMA’s 20th Year with collections of twenty art enthusiasts, through January 6. Concurrent with “From Fire, Love Rises: Stories Shared from the Artist Community.” 14 artists and 19 writers share their experiences of the October 2017 fires in Sonoma in the form of bronze, photography, ceramics, print making, new media, poetry and prose. Free resilience event from 11 to 1.

September 29, 6 to 8: Opening reception of “Sonoma Fire Stories.”

Concurrently: Installation in the Plaza on September 29 of “LOVE” sculpture by Laura Kimpton, in place through January 6.

Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival

September 28: Opening Gala at the Plaza 7 to 10pm. 

September 29: Weekend festivities, 11 am – 10pm, including artisan jewelry, ceramics, and paintings by local artists.

September 30: Exhibition continues, 8 AM to 4 PM.

Vintage House

Continuing: Art classes in pastels, watercolors, art journaling and other creative adult workshops, some in partnership with Santa Rosa Junior College’s continuing education programs. Programs are offered on Mondays (two different art classes) Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Check the list of all classes on the website.

Keith Wicks

September: The San Francisco Academy of Art set up the opportunity earlier this year for Keith Wicks to teach plein air painting for 30 days in Florence, Italy. He spent his free weekends in the countryside, and his own 30 paintings from that project are displayed in a solo exhibition at Bump Cellars, 521 Broadway, Sonoma, for the month of September.
