Three Valley wineries honored with Historic Preservation Awards

Posted on May 6, 2016 by Sonoma Valley Sun

STICKSThe Sonoma League for Historic Preservation has announced winners of its 2016 Historic Preservation Awards, to be celebrated with a May 18 reception at the League’s Heritage and Events Center Garden.

Three Sonoma Valley wineries — Buena Vista Winery, Pangloss Cellars and Three Sticks Winery — will be honored for their preservation of significant historic structures on their respective properties.

Accepting the awards will be Jean-Charles Boisset, Proprietor of Buena Vista Winery; Winemaker Erich Bradley of Pangloss Cellars; and owners Bill and Eva Price of Three Sticks Winery

“Sonoma is not only the site of major California historical events but also the birthplace of the California wine industry,” said League President Robert Demler. “It is therefore appropriate that the League recognizes those wineries that have significantly contributed to preserving Sonoma’s rich architectural heritage.”

pathwayBoisset purchased Buena Vista Winery in 2011 and immediately began a significant restoration to preserve and protect the winery’s cellars and caves. In 2012, a seismic retrofit (above) was completed that allowed the long-closed cellars to re-open to the public. Said Architect Naomi Miroglio, “The most challenging, yet gratifying aspect of the project was to achieve Boisset’s vision to develop a structural upgrade scheme that would have no visible impact to the historic character and features of the building.”

unnamedPangloss Cellars’ tasting lounge (above) is the carefully restored 114-year-old G.H. Hotz Building on Sonoma Plaza at 35 Napa St. E., land granted by the Mexican Government to the San Francisco Solano Mission in 1823.

Three Sticks’ Bill and Eva Price embarked a nearly two-year preservation and renovation project of the historic Vallejo-Casteñada Adobe at 143 W. Spain St. (shown at top of page). The property is one of Sonoma’s few remaining buildings from California’s Mexican Period (1821-1846). The house was constructed by Captain Salvador Vallejo, brother of General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the Commandante Générale of California.

The event, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 291 First St. E., is open to League members. To RSVP call 707.996.3422.

  1. Oh, Be still, my heart. Three wine bars redecorate a bunch of old buildings and they get an award for “historic preservation?’ If a new owner comes along and redecorates again in another color scheme, maybe changes the furniture and the drapes, do they get an award for Historic Preservation too?

  2. Lovely and well deserving awards. Unfortunately, that is NOT a picture of the Pangloss Tasting Lounge on the Sonoma Plaza. That’s the old tasting room in Glen Ellen!

    1. Michelle — eh, so it’s in Glen Ellen. Glen Ellen, Sonoma, Paso Robles . . . when pretending to preserve history in order to give out awards, history is wherever you find it. The dirt underneath your house is 3.5 billion years old, & the League for Historical Preservation should give you an an award for preserving it.

    2. Photo has been corrected. Page now shows the Sonoma location. Sorry!

  3. Dear Sun Editor:

    Two comments:

Please change your policy for allowing a pseudonym instead of a ‘real’ name for a contributor to the responses to an article. It appears to me that, when there is a negative comment, it is usually from someone not using their own name.

In addition to an incorrect photo [which you have now changed – thanks], the contact phone number was also incorrect – the correct number is 707-996-3432.

    Kind regards,

    Robert Demler

  4. Pangloss is beautiful. Having seen the before, during and after, I am always amazed at the transformation. The exposed stone work that was originally hidden really makes the space very unique. The attention to detail in all aspects of the construction, design and decor are clearly evident. Congratulations to everyone at Pangloss!

  5. Your whiny name says it all. Just be glad for good things and quit imagining what might happen. As Bing Crosby sang, “You gotta Ac-Cen-Tuate the Positive, E-lim-I-nate the Negative” Latch on to the A-Firm-A-Tive, and don’t mess with Mr. In-Between!”
