Clydesdale farm back on the market

The Mission Bell Clydesdale Farm in downtown Sonoma is back on the market after a fundraising effort to buy and preserve the 2.7-acre property fell short of the $7 million price tag.

“While we are almost there, we have run out of time,” said Patricia Cullinan, president of the The Blue Wing Adobe Trust. The nonprofit has raised $4 million, including a $500,000 pledge from the city of Sonoma.

The trust had an exclusive negotiating agreement with the Castagnasso family, which owns the downtown parcel fronting West Spain Spain east of Sonoma Plaza. The original deadline, extended once in February, has expired, Cullinan said

Zoned for residential development, the overall property could ultimately see up to 30 units built on its 2.7 acres. It includes at its eastern side a two-story farmhouse, circa 1890, and two barns.

The BWAT responded to the parcel’s initial real estate listing with a plan to buy and preserve the open space. It envisioned a working stable, garden, vineyard and educational elements, with certain commercial components to fund the ongoing operation.

Cullinan said the fundraising effort focused on private foundations dedicated to historic preservation and the preservation of open space.

Though the property is now on the general real estate market, Cullinan said the trust remains committed to protecting the property and “optimistic that the additional funds will be secured soon.”

If those efforts fail, or the property sells to another entity, Cullinan said that all donations to the Save The Farm campaign will be returned.

“Our goal then, as now, is to protect this historic property from development and to preserve the iconic farmstead for future generations.”
