At Monday night’s meeting, Sonoma’s City Council unanimously approved a resolution calling for the disbanding of internment camps for asylum-seeking refugees. Though the City of Sonoma has no jurisdiction over national immigration policy, the council’s support of the resolution may be the beginning of a county-wide effort to object to policies more than one member of the council called “disgusting.”

Originally drafted by a small group of local citizens, including former Sonoma Mayor Larry Barnett (columnist and member of the SUN Editorial Board), a petition supporting passage of the resolution was signed by close to 800 mostly local residents people when it was posted on the change.org website three weeks ago.

Now that the resolution has been approved, Barnett, as well as Mayor Harrington, indicated they are prepared to initiate outreach to interested parties and council members in other Sonoma County cities.
