Sonoma’s Memorial Day ceremony canceled
With the beloved July 4th parade already canceled, another long-standing local tradition will take a Covid-19 hiatus in 2020. The Sonoma Valley Joint Memorial Day Observance, which involves every major veteran organization located within the Sonoma Valley, has been canceled.
The Memorial Day Observance ceremony and the All-American Picnic were set for Monday, May 25.
Gary Magnani, the chairman of the planning committee for both the ceremony and the picnic said: “We encourage everyone to continue giving special recognition and remembrance of those who have served to preserve and protect our freedom.”
Ron Lawson, the President of the Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley said: “Stay home, stay safe and remember why we celebrate Memorial Day.”
The decision to cancel these two beloved annual events was in direct response to the County’s recent decision to extend the shelter in place order.
“Even though there is no ceremony to attend this year, we can still honor our veterans who gave the ultimate price in the service of our country,” added Terry Leen, the commander of AMVETS Hap Arnold Post #55 in the Sonoma Valley
“We have to honor them,” Gary Magnani said of the Sonoma Valley’s – and the nation’s – war dead, “but this is unfortunately not going to be like years past.”
