A record-breaking month of feeding the homeless

An update from Kathy King of Sonoma Overnight Support
I want to heed the words of Oprah Winfrey — “The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.” — by sharing with you what we at SOS are celebrating now.
I want to praise the generosity of:
- IMPACT100 Sonoma. Since 2009, when it was started by Annette Lomont and Christine Dohrmann, this women’s grant-making organization has given out more than $3 million to nonprofits in Sonoma Valley. This year they gave out $300,000 in Impetus grants to 13 nonprofits in Sonoma Valley, and SOS was given $25,000 to help fund our food program.
- Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley and Rotary Club of Sonoma Sunrise. They have awarded more than $190,000 to local businesses, which was matched with $100,000 from Sonoma Valley Catalyst Fund. Their latest grant to SOS, for $3,000, will pay for one month’s worth of meals from Mary’s Pizza Shack and Delicious Dish.
Equally as important is that next week SOS will be able to move two more of our car clients into Los Guilicos Village
, once some minor repairs have been made to the huts. This brings our Los Guilicos total to 12 Sonoma residents, and we still have three people on the waitlist. As more huts become available, we will be able to move them in, too.
We had a record-breaking month in March, providing 5,306 meals to 237 people. This is the highest number of meals we have ever served in a month to the unhoused and food-deprived and their families.
We are celebrating because we had the ability to feed them hot, nutritious meals, thanks to the generosity of community groups and individual donors like you.
So that we can continue to meet this overwhelming need, I’m asking you to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 8, when SOS will hold a drive-thru fundraiser at the Sonoma Springs Community Hall. A five-course dinner to-go will be prepared by our in-house chefs, Dan Kahn and Dawn McIntosh, assisted by our volunteers.
And finally, I want to wish you all a very Happy Easter and Happy Passover. I hope that you get to celebrate with family and friends – socially distanced, of course, or if you’ve had your vaccine shots, even closer!
