Sonoma County now in Orange Tier

Posted on April 8, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Sonoma County this week moved into the less-restrictive Orange Tier.

The re-designation means restaurants can expand their indoor dining capacity, as can movie theaters, gyms and places of worship. It also allows bars, winery tasting rooms, bowling alleys and offices to reopen with limits. See the chart below for more details.

Sonoma, Napa and Contra Costa Counties had all been in the Red (“substantial”) Tier, the third-worst of the state’s four-tier system. Orange is labeled “moderate.” If case-rate metrics and vaccination numbers continue to improve, the final step of Yellow (“minimal”).

All restrictions could be lifted as soon as June 15, state officials said today.

Sonoma County has actually seen a slight increase in its case-rate numbers, according to Dr. Sundari Mase, the county health officer, who called the figures “troubling.”  But because the state now figures vaccinations in its formula, the County meets the revised Orange criteria.

That makes Solano County is the only Bay Area county remaining in the Red Tier, and may be relegated back to the Purple Tier due to a rise in case rates.
