Serve it forth: M.F.K. Fisher writing contest

Posted on April 1, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

“To live agreeably in a world of an increasing number of disagreeable surprises,” wrote M.F.K. Fisher in How to Cook a Wolf, “it is all a question of weeding out what you yourself like to do best.”

For Fisher, that passion was writing. Is it yours?

The third annual Last House Writing Contest honors the style and spirit of Fisher, who, with Wolf and other works, inspired courage and creativity during times of crisis.

Emerging writers of all ages are invited to submit original, unpublished essays, stories or articles that examine and explore how leaning into nature can help during challenging times. Do the foods we prepare, eat and share, and the ways we engage with the natural world around us, affect our very ability to survive and thrive?

The contest is presented by Audubon Canyon Ranch. Its Bouverie Preserve in Glen Ellen is the site of Fisher’s ‘last house,’ where she wrote 13 books (one third of her collection) during 21 years of residence. There, she welcomed welcomed friends such as Julia Child, James Beard, and Maya Angelou.

Entries (75o words, max) accepted through May 31.

There are three age groups, youth included, and there is a $40 entry fee.

The judging panel includes Anna Michele Jordan, Ruth Reichl and Alice Waters.
