Garden Club meets to talk organic soil

Posted on October 25, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Valley of the Moon Garden Club hosts an in-person meeting on Thursday, November 4, with guest speaker Paul Martinez, owner of Sonoma Valley Wholesale Nursery. His topic: how to cultivate a healthy garden and landscape using organic soil and pesticide-free plants.

His passion for growing plants was sparked by his mother at a very early age and his love for horticulture is grounded by a deep respect and amazement for the environment and its potential to adapt.

Martinez founded PDM Landscape in the 1980s, an ornamental landscape installation, maintenance, and construction company.  After 40 years of experience in the horticulture trade in Sonoma and Napa Valleys, he became convinced that organic practices are what sustain the environment and healthy plants. The lack of reasonably priced, locally sourced landscape plants grown organically inspired him to start Sonoma Valley Wholesale Nursery in 2009. He also sells retail to the public.

His organic potting soils are mixed to grow plants that are sold in pots, which work in the customer’s native environments better than other container-grown plants.  “I spend an inordinate amount of time in the field observing plants in various stages of growth” says Martinez.

The meeting will be at Burlingame Hall, First Congregational Church, 252 West Spain Street, Sonoma. Meet and greet is at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation starts at 7 p.m. All are welcome. Garden Club members are free and it is $5 for guests.  Masks are required, one is provided if forgotten, and chairs are spaced.

A plant raffle will follow the meeting.

  1. I went to the Garden Club meeting at Burlingame Hall at First Congregational Church November 4 and unfortunately forgot my overcoat I placed it on the back of my chair when I sat down. I was wondering if anyone picked it up for safekeeping when the chairs was cleared off the floor?
