KSVY boosts signal with new broadcast tower

Posted on November 19, 2021 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Broadcasting from a new tower overlooking Stage Gulch Road, local radio station KSVY has expanded and improved its radio signal to reach more listeners in Sonoma Valley and beyond.

KSVY Sonoma 91.3 FM has acquired and installed a new antenna, 850 ft above sea level. The upgrade is part of Sonoma County and the City of Sonoma’s expansion of emergency communications.

General Manager Bob Taylor says the new signal covers about 450 square terrestrial miles, a significant increase from the previous configuration’s six-to-ten-mile signal.

The upgrade bolsters KSVY 91.3 FM’s broadcast for all of Sonoma Valley and reaches potential new listeners in southern Sonoma County, Petaluma and Rohnert Park and as far as St. Helena and American Canyon in Napa County.

e antenna with a very focused signal within a specific frequency pocket with a more extensive range and far fewer shadows and dead spots, Taylor said.

The new site also requires less power, and benefits from the significantly higher elevation in the rural hillsides southwest of Sonoma.

The former site and antenna remain an asset, though, as a backup transmitter.

KSVY 91.3 FM is a non-commercial community radio station. A fundraising plan kicked off by Simon and Kimberly Blattner led to an incredible response, Taylor said.

The station will launch its “KSVY Connects!” fundraising drive on November 30.

Grants from Sonoma Valley Fund, Community Foundation of Sonoma County and a burgeoning partnership with Sonoma County helped to fund the antenna upgrade.

KSVY 91.3 FM Sonoma broadcasts radio at 91.3 FM, live-streams at ksvy.org. For Smart Devices, just say, “Play K-S-V-Y” to listen live.

  1. Love many things about your staton, but WHY do you play the Doors every 15 minutes? In general, 80% of your music seems to be 60s/ early 70s top 40. I am also from that era, but surely you could expand the music format some.
    thanks for listening.

  2. Well , not that I have any great insight , but there is an auto play feature for when the station has nobody on air . Most , if not all the on air people are volunteer . You can certainly call in when you hear somebody live and see if they can accomodate you .Most of the music people do one hour so things change all the time .
