Trashion Fashion at Sonoma Community Center

Posted on March 20, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

After two years of producing the local event virtually, Sonoma Community Center returns to hosting the Trashion Fashion Show live and in-person on Saturday, April 2 at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall with a 2 p.m. matinee and a 5 p.m. evening show with a “Sweets and Bubbles Reception” following.

Outrageous head-to-toe designs, made from recycled materials and found objects, will once again walk the runway handmade by local community members who answered the challenge of turning trash into wearable art.

The runway show is only one of the few scheduled fundraising events that have become: Trashion Fashion Sonoma. “It’s a delight to invite the public to be a part of all the fantastic output that comes from the Trashion events,” Creative Programs Manager, Eric Jackson, commented. “We are doing what we do best by bringing a creative response to our waste management issues.”

Included in the annual line-up is the ever-popular Barbie gallery exhibit and silent auction, “BARBIE: Reclaimed & Reinvented.” This art show at the Center featuring community submitted entries, will showcase Barbie dolls and friends saved from the landfills, thanks in part by Recology, and repurposed into new works of recycled art. Gallery 212’s Opening Reception, scheduled for Thursday, March 31st from 5:30 – 7:30pm, will launch the exhibit’s silent auction in which each handcrafted piece will be available for sale. The auction will conclude Saturday, April 9th. Entry forms and Barbie submissions will be accepted through March 11th for anyone wanting to transform a Barbie of their own.

Saturday, April 9 will also mark the culmination of Trashion Week with a day of multiple free events at the Center. The beloved Dogs on the Catwalk, a Trashion runway show for dog owners and their four-legged friends, will be held on the Center’s Back Patio from 11:30am – 12:30pm. Entries for Dogs on the Catwalk can be submitted through April 6 to meet the Early Entry Deadline.

The Center will continue with an afternoon of free activities called “Trash Bash” from 12:30 – 3:00pm, following the doggy show.  Attendees will have the rare opportunity to see all of the Trashion Runway Show outfits up-close as well as meet with and talk to the designers. The Runway Show winners will be announced and awarded. And the Center’s quarterly Clothes and Book Swap will be open for participants to switch out clothing items and reading materials for new ones. Refreshments and creative activities will be also available.

And to complete the efforts of waste management mindfulness, Trash Bash attendees will be able to visit with Recology Sonoma Marin, who will be on hand to provide recycling information and answer questions. Additionally, Zero Waste Sonoma will be collecting electronic waste for disposal and mattresses for recycling.

For tickets and information visit TrashionFashionSonoma.org or call (707) 938-462. All proceeds benefit the Center’s educational programming.

The Trashion Fashion Show is sponsored and partnered by Republic of Thrift, Christopher Mahurin, Rancho Maria Wines, Recology, Chateau Sonoma, COOKIE…take a bite!, Cafe La Haye, Whole Foods, Friedman’s Home Improvement, Sonoma Garbage Collectors, Picazo Cafe, County of Sonoma, Sonoma Plein Air Foundation.
