It’s a special kind of movie night, hosted by Sonoma’s own Jennifer Churchill and her son Weston, a Sonoma Charter School second-grader, who inspired his mom’s book, Movies are Magic.’
The free event on Thursday, June 30, is a launch party for the book followed by a screening of the Buster Keaton classic Steamboat Bill Jr.
The duo hosts the show Classic Films for Kids on The Film Detective channel.
“It’s so important to make sure kids know about these films,” said Churchill. “A lot of kids only see modern movies with fast editing, explosions and CGI. It’s really important for them to know the history of film and that these movies exist.”
The evening at the Sebastiani Theatre starts at 5 p.m. with book-signings and hands-on projects for kids. The film begins at 5:30 p.m.
The book Movies Are Magic is a children’s book about the history of classic movies. A former journalist, film reviewer, and currently a public relations professional, Churchill is passionate about teaching kids media literacy and film history.
Her greatest joy, she says, is hearing the laughter of children watching old black-and-white silent films starring the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton.
The book features an introduction by Turner Classic Movies Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz.
