Final Weekend: ‘Drowsy Chaperone’ enlivens Sonoma stage

Posted on July 22, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma Arts Live production of The Drowsy Chaperone, a musical that won five Tony Awards, enters its second weekend on the Rotary Stage at Sonoma Community Center.

Directed by Michael Ross, the show plays through July 31.

The show begins with a gentlemen, a true lover of the theater (played by Tim Setzer), alone in his home. He chooses an album carefully – the soundtrack of his favorite musical, the fictional 1928 hit The Drowsy Chaperone – and sits down to listen. As the record plays, the musical comes to life on stage, and he wryly comments on the music, story, and actors, and sometimes even joins in the fun.

This show is a delightful, full-of-fun homage to the American musicals of the Jazz Age, with Kim Williams, Sean O’Brien and Dani Beem.

Tony Awards, and was nominated for multiple West End theater awards. The book was written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar with music and lyrics written by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.
