Sonoma Community Center: A show 70 years in the making

The archives have been combed, old photo albums searched and local newspapers scoured. The result is That 70th Show, a history of the Sonoma Community Center told through images, historical materials, newspaper archives, and other sources.

The exhibition, curated by local artist Mike Acker in honor of the Center’s 70th anniversary, runs January 27 through April 30. 

The materials on display offer a fun look at some of the most interesting stories from the Center’s history – including how the building was sold to Dr. Carroll Andrews for $20,000 in 1952, how it got its historic landmark designation in the 1980s, and the time it starred in a horror movie.

The exhibit will also feature an interactive Community wall; visitors are encouraged to add their own stories to the larger narrative. After all, the story of the Center is the story of Sonoma, says Molly Spencer, director of engagement and lead on this exhibition.

“It’s been a joy to comb through past photos and press clippings and see familiar faces, celebrations, classes, events and the many changes that have taken place,” Spencer said. “So many people have poured their heart and soul into keeping this institution alive and thriving.”

The Center invites the entire community to enjoy the experience and, Spencer said, “feel the magic when you walk these halls. We all love a good story.”

That 70th Show runs from January 27 through April 30 at the Center, 276 E. Spain St. It is free to the public. An opening reception will be held on January 27 from 5-7.30pm. No RSVP is required.
