Celebrate Black Americans with Sonoma County Library

February is Black History Month, a time to recognize, celebrate and honor the rich and diverse history, contributions and achievements of Black Americans. Sonoma County Library celebrates Black History Month by hosting events and highlighting books, movies, music and resources available through your local library. 

“We are excited to offer a variety of programs in celebration of Black History Month, when we formally honor the contributions of Black Americans to our society,” said Sonoma County Library Interim Director Erika Thibault.

The month of February has been designated Black History Month since 1976. Black Resistance is the national theme for Black History Month 2023—established by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History—and Sonoma County Library is featuring relevant library and community resources online and in library branches.

The Sonoma County Library recognizes that the commitment to celebrating and learning about the generations of Black Americans who have influenced and enriched the nation and society encompasses more than just one month.

The Sonoma County Library Commission adopted a public statement on racism and social equity on February 7, 2022. The resolution confirms that the Sonoma County Library stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and the community in calling for peaceful, yet powerful action to turn the tide of systemic racism and begin the transition to a just and sustainable society.

Sonoma County Library commits to being an antiracist organization and honoring Black history, community, culture and achievements year-round.
