SV Museum hosts two new shows

Posted on February 17, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art has launched its first exhibitions for 2023. We Are Still Here: Pomo Artists and Our Cultural Landscape and The New Californians: Photographs by Judy Dater are open through April 30. We Are Still Here highlights contemporary artwork of Native Pomo artists (including Meyo Marrufo, above) and reflects the resilience of the Pomo Tribe and its strong connections to their land as a place for gatherings, and religious observances.

In The New Californians, Dater’s portraits of Californians reflect the diversity and cultural richness that immigrant, indigenous, and itinerant residents contribute to the Golden State. The museum is open Wednesday (free admission) though Sunday, 11am-5pm. 551 Broadway. Svma.org.

In a February 26 event at the museum, Bay Area photographer Judy Dater will discuss her long artistic career and collaboration with multiple subjects. Dater shared an interest in portraiture with her mentor Imogen Cunningham who eventually drew her into the West Coast school of photography. Working with the theme of personal identity, Dater presents a typical cross-section of people residing in the San Francisco Bay Area.
