La Luz Center announces free summer camps
La Luz Center, in collaboration with Kimzin Creative, local arts and equity consulting group, will present four, free arts summer camps for local youth June 20 through August 4.
The camps are designed to give youth an opportunity to learn about themselves and latinx culture through the arts — visual, performance, film, and music.
Film Camp (Ages 10-15): Two weeks of exploring and learning the in’s and out’s of shooting a short film! All levels are welcome. Presented in collaboration with AV Film. Dates: June 20th – June 30th
Aventura Artistica: Tierra Creativa! (Ages 7-12): 5 days of exploring art and nature through painting, cooking, folklórico dance, and hiking! Presented in collaboration with Sonoma Ecology Center & Grupo Folklórico Quetzalén. Dates: July 10th – July 14th
LBC’s Mariachi Camp(Ages 8-18): Sing and learn to play the guitar or violin while preparing for a friends and family performance. No experience necessary. All instruments will be provided. Presented in collaboration with Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Dates: July 24th – August 4th
LBC’s Folklórico Dance Camp(Ages 10-18): Students will learn the basics of ballet folklórico while preparing for a family performance. No experience necessary. Presented in collaboration with Luther Burbank Center for the Arts and Grupo Folklórico Quetzalén. Dates: July 24th – August 4th
“Providing local access to free and quality camp programming for our community in community with our partners is a dream realized,” said La Luz Center Director of Programs Sandy Sanchez. “I’m looking forward to seeing our campers socialize, learn and have fun. Camps offer unique experiences to children, one we hope to grow our attendance capacity every year. ”
Summer camp program partner Nikko Kimzin of Kimzin Creative added, “We work with all our teaching artists and partner organizations to provide bi-lingual staff and arts content to create responsive arts programming that authentically celebrates the cultural wealth of our communities.”
The camps are part of La Luz Center’s larger CASA de la Cultura programming that seeks to build a foundation to amplify and deepen the voices of Latinx people, and strengthen the connection between the Latinx and non-Latinx community. They celebrate and educate the legacy of traditional and modern Latinx arts and culture practices as well.
