Hospital pumped up for healthy heart month

Sonoma Valley Hospital celebrates National Heart Health Month with full roster of services and activities to help keep community hearts alive and healthy.

Beginning Feb. 1, Sonoma Valley Hospital will offer a test to determine your risk of cardiac event. The Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring CT Scan is a non-invasive CT scan that measures calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. Candidates should be between 40 and 65 years old and have at least one of the following risk factors related to heart disease: history of smoking, family history of heart or vascular disease, overweight, sedentary lifestyle, diabetes or high blood pressure. Calcium scoring is being offered without a doctor’s order, and on a private pay basis. The fee is for $295. Insurance will not be billed for this exam. Monday, Feb. 7, 9:30 a.m. Sonoma cardiologist Dr. James Price will be a guest on Ken Brown’s radio show discussing the warning signs of heart attack and how to maintain good cardiac health. The show airs on Sun FM 91.3 and live online at sunfmtv.com/fm.

Saturday, Feb. 12, 9 a.m. Celia Lenson, the manager of medical records at SVH, will lead a Healthy Heart walk on the bike path. Celia will keep the pace brisk, but also allow you to smell the roses along the way. Meet at Depot Park. (No walk if raining.)

Wednesday, Feb. 16, 4 p.m. SVH cardiac rehab nurse Maureen McGrane and hospital nutritionist Nancy Angel will teach you how to read labels and shop for groceries with a healthy heart in mind. Meet in front of Sonoma Safeway, 477 W. Napa St.

Saturday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. SVH hosts a hike on the Sonoma Overlook trail. Meet at Overlook parking lot. (No hike if raining)

Saturday, Feb. 26, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vascular surgeon Dr. Laura Pak and her team will hold a Vascular Screening event at the hospital. The screening event includes ultrasound scans of carotid arteries, abdominal aorta and blood pressures of the lower extremities to screen for peripheral arterial disease. After the screening tests, Dr. Pak will discuss results, which you then you can share with your physician. The screening cost is $99, and reservations are required. Financial aid is available for those with financial hardships. Please call Kimberly Drummond at 935.5004 for reservations.
