How to become a dumpster diva

Posted on January 28, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

In a contest that gives a whole new meaning to the fashion term ‘trashy,’ the Sonoma Community Center invites designers and ambitious recyclers to create items for a “Trashion” fashion show and exhibit.

Margaret Hatcher, SCC special projects manager, said this is a chance to show how fun, innovative and beautiful recycled fashion can be, help the planet and be eligible to win cash awards.

The “Trashion Fashion Show and Accessory Exhibit” will be held in conjunction with the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art’s exhibition, “Eco Chic: Towards Sustainable Fashion,” opening on Feb. 9.

The call to artists is open to individuals or groups over the age of 16 residing in California. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 18.

Trashion is a philosophy and an ethic that encompasses environmentalism and innovation, she said. It springs from a desire to use limited resources by making traditional and avant-garde clothing or objects from recycled materials or cast off junk.
