‘Endow the Valley’ campaign begins

The month of October has been designated “Endow Sonoma Valley Month” by the Sonoma Valley Fund. Endorsed by both Sonoma County and the City of Sonoma, the initiative seeks to increase awareness and participation in planned giving, an increasingly important component of the overall funding picture for Sonoma Valley’s frontline charities.

“Sonoma Valley has a rich and long history of philanthropy,” says Sonoma Valley Fund President Barbara Young. “Residents regularly volunteer and provide financial support to the non-profit organizations that serve the basic needs and improve the quality of life of our community.”

But in the current economic environment, these non-profit organizations are struggling to raise the funds necessary for their day-to-day needs, Young said. “Promoting planned giving now can be a way for nonprofits to build a secure foundation for their future hard work.”

To increase awareness and understanding of the purpose and mechanics of planned giving, Sonoma Valley Fund, with the help of its 22 non-profit partners, will host a series of informational meetings during the month of October, all of them free of charge and open to the public.

The inaugural event will take place on October 11 at 5:00pm at Vintage House in Sonoma. Ben Stone, executive director of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board, will deliver his “State of Our Community” presentation, containing observations and insights on current conditions in the Valley and the broad implications and challenges they pose to local non-profit groups.

Stone will be followed by estate planning attorney Valerie Pistole, who will describe simple, easy, and practical ways to consider and arrange for a planned gift. Complimentary food and wine will be served.
