Film Fest readies for April 10 opening

The Sonoma International Film Festival, with over 100 films shown at eight venues within walking distance of Sonoma Plaza, is poised for an April 10-14 run.

The 16th annual event features seven premiers, independent features, documentaries, world cinema, shorts and a showcase of Spanish language films, plus parties and star-spotting opps (Mary Louise Parker, Demian Bichir, Ray Liotta, etc.).

“Now add delicious food, wine and music, and attendees will thoroughly enjoy our unique festival,” said Kevin W. McNeely, executive director. “This year’s program will transport audiences all over the world, from Russia to Italy, Venezuela to Nepal, Iran to Iceland, and more, with such themes as music and arts, environmental, LGBT, sports and action, and, of course, food and wine.”

Opening the festival will be “The Iceman,” the true story of a family man who happened to be a contract killer. The feature screens Wednesday, April 10, at the Sebastiani Theatre, with director Ariel Vromen and Ray Liotta attending. The fest closes with the French film “A Monkey on My Shoulder,” starring Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) and Venezuelan superstar Édgar Ramírez (Carlos).

Another marquee night is the Spotlight Award event, April 13, this year honoring Academy Award-nominated actor Demián Bichir and Golden Globe-winning actress Mary-Louise Parker.

“Both Parker and Bichir exemplify such amazing traits as actors,” McNeely said. “We are thrilled to celebrate their contribution to independent film.”
