The ultimate fireworks show

Posted on June 27, 2016 by Sonoma Valley Sun

bf2It takes some doing to get there – a 6.5 mile hike with 1,500 foot elevation gain – but the July 4 view from Sugarloaf Mountain is incredible: down below, as many as 20 different fireworks displays throughout the Bay Area.

Upon arrival at the top, a mountaintop reception awaits, with wine, beer, snacks and sweets, and a panorama of fireworks displays that span the Bay Area from Windsor in the north, Berkeley and Oakland in the east, San Francisco to the south, with possible views even into the South Bay.

Bill and Dave’s annual Independence Day Hike is recommended for seasoned hikers. It begins at 7 p.m. and, after an all-downhill descent via the access road, ends back at the parking lot at about 11 p.m.

Price per ticket is $50, with all proceeds support Team Sugarloaf’s operation and maintenance of Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Kids 12-17 are $10. Not recommended for children under 12.

Reservations are required. With a limit of 90 hikers the annual event is a usual sell-out.

Remember to bring a headlamp or flashlight. Binoculars are a useful option. Proper attire with sturdy hiking or trail shoes and layered clothing is a must; It should be nice and cool at the top so be prepared with an extra layer. We will return to the parking lot at approximately 11 PM.
