Major construction project coming to West Napa Street

MapA $2.3 million project to replace the water main under Sonoma’s busiest street begins Monday, but officials say the four-month job will be done primarily at night.

Excavation and construction will run in phases from Sonoma Plaza to the intersection of Highway 12, near Staples.

Work is planned for Sundays through Thursdays, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. according to the City’s Pubic Works office.

Demolition will occur between 8 and 10 p.m. to reduce construction noise.

The project may require one-way traffic control during the nighttime construction hours. The traffic wait time should not exceed five minutes, and traffic flaggers will be in place during any lane closures.

Residents and business owners will be notified at least 48 hours in advance as to the time and duration of any construction operations that will affect access to their property.

The project will address what the City calls “the aging or failing water system infrastructure,” including replacing the eight-inch water main and adding new hydrants.

A $2,371,775 contract for the work was awarded by the City Council to Anvil Builders, Inc. in February.
