The high hopes of the Sonoma Valley High School boys baseball team for a long postseason run were dashed on Tuesday with a first-round loss to the team from Piner High School in Santa Rosa.
The 15-10 Dragons hosted the Piner Prospectors (17-9) at Arnold Field, and took an early lead in the top of the second with senior captain Gerardo Guzman getting on base with a double and coming home on a single by junior Jayce Ray. Piner answered back immediately with two runs off starting pitcher Max Smoot in the bottom of the second, and the score remained 2-1 through the end of the seven-inning game.
This was the final high school game for seniors Guzman, Smoot, and Mitch Isetta. The young Dragons team, coached by Don Lyons, had been in first place in the Sonoma County League for much of the season. The Dragons ended the season behind the co-champion Propectors and Casa Grande Gauchos from Petaluma.
The Lady Dragons softball team ended its play during the regular season with a 5-16-1 record.
