An anonymous caller Friday afternoon tipped police to three youths chasing ducks near the Sonoma Plaza duck pond, but officers didn’t need to ask what happened – they just looked at one teen’s cell phone.
“They were very cooperative once we contacted them,” Sonoma police Sgt. Dave Thompson said, adding that the teens were less polite to the Plaza’s feathered inhabitants according to a cell phone video made by one of the boys of another terrorizing the ducks and laughing.
Thompson said the boy in the video was cited for a misdemeanor violation of the city’s municipal code, which prohibits annoying or molesting Plaza wildlife.
The incident is a serious matter to locals and law enforcement. In late June, something still unknown killed a nest of 13 ducklings by the Plaza duck pond, scarred one adult and traumatized the others for several days.
