Guidelines for appropriate dress at SVHS

(As per the SVHS 2008-2009 Calendar & Handbook)

Student dress and grooming must be appropriate to class and school activities, not be a safety or health hazard, and not cause a disruption to the educational environment (SVUSD BP5132 (a) and AR 5132 (a)).

1. Clothing, jewelry, and personal items, such as backpacks, binders, gym bags, etc., shall be free of writing, pictures, or any other insignia which are crude, vulgar, profane or sexually suggestive; which bear drug, alcohol or tobacco company advertising, promotions and likenesses; or which advocate racial, ethnic or religious prejudice.

2. Clothes shall be sufficient to conceal undergarments at all times.
The following are prohibited:
– See-through or fish-net fabrics
– Half-shirts or sideless shirts
– Bare midrifs, bare or open back shirts/blouses
– Strapless/tube tops
– Clothing with holes or that is torn, ripped or ragged
– Sagging pants that expose underwear
– Excessively short skirts or shorts

3. Tops must cover the midriff and must be at least as high as the top of the student’s armpit.

4. Shorts and skirts must be at least fingertip length when arms are placed naturally at the student’s side.

5. Shoes or sandals must be worn at all times.

6. Chains hanging from clothing, dog collars and studded jewelry may not be worn.

7. Pajamas and/or slippers of any kind are not permitted

8. Any article of clothing that is deemed inappropriate may not be worn. Each school shall allow students to wear sun-protective clothing, including but not limited to hats, for outdoor use during the school day.
