Arson is suspected in a pair of fires that broke out Thursday night along the bike path behind Sonoma Valley High School.
“They were suspicious in nature,” Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority division chief Bob Norrbom said Friday. “We were unable to determine a cause, but there was no other reason for fire to appear in the area.”
The first alarm rang out just after 8:45 p.m., drawing three SVFRA engines to the south side of East MacArthur Street near Second Street East where crews found a slowly spreading 20-by-20-foot fire which they knocked down in minutes.
At 9:38 p.m., however, multiple 911 callers reported a second fire in the 200 block of MacArthur Court under a nearby bridge. That blaze was brought under control at 9:50 p.m.
Norrbom said neither fire did any real damage, adding that a search of the bike path and environs failed to disclose any suspects. Anyone with any information about the incidents should call the Sonoma Valley Fire and Rescue Authority at 996-2102.
