In other Dec. 3 actions, the Sonoma City Council:
Coast Miwok Day
Received a presentation by City Historian George McKale about “Coast Miwok Day,” a celebration proposed for Spring 2009 of the Sonoma-indigenous tribes who thrived for approximately 2,000 years before the arrival of 18th-century Spanish missionaries. McKale said the event would include traditional foods, dancing and flint-knapping as well as discussions about current affairs such as sovereignty and casinos. Councilmembers welcomed the idea, and Joanne Sanders volunteered to help McKale develop the idea.
Tex Juen Park vineyard
Agreed to continue a $1 annual rental agreement with the Valley of the Moon Dilettante Enological Society for the Tex Juen Park vineyard at the corner of Fryer Creek and Leveroni Road. The group first entered a 10-year lease of the one-acre park in 1997.
Sonoma’s Tree Ordinance
Sent back to the city’s Community Services and Environment Commission a recommendation to expand Sonoma’s Tree Ordinance to include tree-removal regulations for single-family lots and private yards. The CSEC had approved the changes in November on a 7-1 vote, but the council – following a suggestion by Councilmember Aug Sebastiani – asked for different standards in evaluating public versus private trees.
Public art element
Asked staff to look into the costs of including a “public art element” with the second phase of the proposed new Sonoma Plaza bike racks. Last month, the council approved the addition of 48 racks to bring the Plaza’s total to 77.
