If March really does come in like a lion and out like a lamb then perhaps we’ll be in good shape for the latter part of the month. Monday’s storm brought wind, rain and glorious cloud formations if you kept an eye toward the sky. And there’s more to come with wet weather continuing throughout the week and weekend. National Weather Service calculations indicate that our rainfall totals are still below optimal levels, but we’re doing better than we have in years.
And while much of the country is blanketed in snow, we see the early signs of spring all around. Warm, sunny skies have brought blooming flowers and trees that are breaking bud. Whatever your location, spring is about rebirth.
Here in Sonoma, we see that rebirth in many places other than nature. At the high school, our seniors are preparing to leave their well-worn nest. Many are in the early phases of the challenging task of college applications. Others are working on building resumes that will launch them into new careers. Senior projects are also underway and are sure to represent an incredible scope of diverse interests. Our cover story highlights the volunteers of Teacher Support Network, who work with teachers at the high school to further educational opportunities. This year, as in year’s past, TSN will recruit 200 volunteers to assist in the senior project panel review.
For children in our Valley, spring sports have begun. Softball and baseball players are busy with practices, with opening day for both sports just around the corner. The youngest players are being born into the sport — how to interact with one another, be a team, learn the art of winning and losing gracefully.
At The Sun, we are experiencing our own rebirth, returning to our roots as a community-driven paper. We want to thank all of you for your loyalty and support of our paper during this transitional period. If you have been to our web site, perhaps you’ve seen our online poll. Most recently, we asked you what you want to see more of in the paper. Is local news of interest to you? Does the police blotter make you sit up and take notice? Is sports a page-turner? Do you want to see more photos of events? More business information? We ask that again now and welcome your feedback. Please send us your comments and ideas so we can continue to grow and make this the best paper possible.
You can pick up The Sun at many locations throughout the Valley (see the list on page 22). Or call our office to sign up for convenient home delivery of the paper. Either way, keep reading The Sun as we experience the rebirth of our community-driven paper.
