District alerts parents to changes in summer school program

In a letter sent home to parents this week, the Sonoma Valley Unified School District office detailed changes being made to its summer school program.

Recent cuts to the budget reduced funding for summer school by thirty percent. Those cuts will be felt by students in the lower grades as now, the district is targeting only those students in fifth and eighth grades who are not making significant progress during the school year and high school students who need to make up credits for graduation requirements. Programs for special education students will be developed based on need, as has been the case in the past.

The summer school dates are as follows:

• 5th grade – June 10-25 and August 9-13
• 8th grade – June 10 – July 16
• 9th – 12th grades – June 10 – July 16

Students in grades outside of those receiving support in summer school, who need support, will be included in intervention programs at individual sites this spring and/or during the 2010-2011 school year.

For more information, parents are encouraged to contact their child’s school office or Joyce Schipper in the district office at 939.4895.
