Scouting, as sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America BSA, is wrapping up celebrating 100 years this year and is alive and well in Sonoma Valley. Children from first grade through high school participate in various activities that build self-esteem, confidence, discipline, public speaking, and learn a variety of survival-life skills. This past centennial year was a very active one with the camping, hikes throughout the Valley, a visit to the Police Station, and the Pinewood Derby Classic. The Indy Car Series, at our very own Infineon Raceway had a race car sponsored by the BSA and thousands of scouts from all over Northern California attended. Finally, members of the Sonoma Post 1943 VFW plan on instructing an astronomy course, and the Scouts will attend a San Francisco Giants game featuring Scouting Anniversary accomplishments with a special tour and on-field ceremony, all in the coming weeks.
Valley readers will notice scouts and their parents or guardians making their rounds in the next few weeks on their annual fundraising drive gathering donations. Donations typically range from $10 to $50 and if you make a donation your scout will provide you with various types and sizes of popcorn to your liking such as make-your-own microwave packs, and ready-made caramel – with and without nuts – toffee, and chocolate/toffee. All products are sourced from the BSA affiliate Trails-End. For those readers who are not popcorn lovers there is a donation program whereby product can instead be shipped to our Military Forces overseas.
Thanks, Sonoma Valley, for 100 years!
