Editor: I am writing in response to Mr. Roger Jack Young’s opinion that a marriage between same sex couples should be called something besides a marriage because it is different than what opposite sex couples have together. I am uncertain as to why Mr. Young believes that a marriage between two people regardless of their sex is different because he offers no explanation, merely a statement of his belief.
I am opposed to gay marriage. I am, however in favor of marriage equality. Calling a marriage between two people of the same sex a gay marriage perpetuates the view that there is something different about their union.
What I and many other Californians are seeking is equality and the freedom to marry the person we choose. Separate is not equal. I urge everyone to refrain from using the term gay marriage but instead use the term marriage equality.
