Editor: Concerning the breast cancer column on page 15 of the October 7 issue – how disgusting that you entitled it Save Those Boobies. Evidently this is a joke to you. Obviously you don’t recognize that people with breast cancer, especially those who have undergone mastectomies, suffer pain and emotional distress during their ordeals. To have the subject verbally demeaned in your newspaper indicates a callousness beyond comprehension. It is true that some serious subjects can enjoy a lighter side, but breast cancer is not one of them. However, there is another use of the word “boobies” … apply it to yourselves.

The use of the word “boobies” has helped bring a HUGE amount of awareness and breast cancer activism within the youth population. As someone who has had my mother, my grandmother and my aunt survive breast cancer and as a person who falls in the “at risk” category of it myself I FULLY support the movement and it has raised millions of dollars in donations. “Boobie” movements have made young women and men aware of breast cancer and the need for early detection and the need for support for all our survivors and those who have not survived. My grandmother lost her breast to breast cancer in her 70’s. She lived to be 90. She was also a nurse since the age of 20. She also called them her boobies, our boobies, your boobies. She passed away several years ago and I know in my heart when she sees people wearing Save the Boobies and I Love Boobies bracelets and T-Shirts and making the word aware of the disease she fought and beat she is damn proud!
