Soroptimists seek donations for Road To Reality

Posted on January 13, 2011 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Soroptimist International of Sonoma Valley will hold the “Road to Reality” life skills information day on Thursday, Feb. 3 for the graduating class of 2011. The purpose of the day is to provide information that will assist the students with adult issues and responsibilities that they will encounter in the near future. Interactive sessions are offered that deal with finance, such as credit cards, loans, checking accounts and investments. Information is shared on apartment rental rights and responsibilities, personal safety, career preparation. This year a social media component will be added, which will encompass privacy issues.

The all-day event is held at Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall with no cost to students. Students are served breakfast and lunch. During the day adults with work experience in the particular topics that the students choose will facilitate inter-active sessions. Students will choose three of eight topics, which include life in college, entrepreneurship/sustainability and skills to obtain employment.

A steering committee of high school seniors helped plan the symposium and chose topics of greatest interest to the students.

At the end of the day a drawing for prizes will be held. The Soroptimists and students invite local businesses to contribute to the life skills day by contributing prizes such as gift cards for corsages, limousine rides, tuxedo rental, hair styles and manicures for prom night. Any donation would be appreciated. Please contact Maddy Leader at 938.7099 or Amanda Lucas at 227.6454 or 996.6002 with questions.
