The El Verano children’s orchestra performs at the opening of the La Luz Family Resource Center. The group, known as El Sistema, is modeled after the Venezuelan program that for 40 years has taken disadvantaged youth off the streets and into musical ensembles to enrich their lives and promote social mobility.
The resource center itself, officially opened April 8, will have two employees: Resource specialist Angie Sánchez will provide social services and counseling to the parents, which will help them in turn support their children’s education; and parent outreach coordinator, Mario Castillo, who continue parent support through health and educational opportunities, including ESL, computer classes and more.
