The forerunner of the multi/mega-band music event, the Monterey Pop Festival, held two years before Woodstock, captured the sound of 1967 (Jefferson Airplane, Janis and Big Brother, gratuitous sitar music) and launched The Who and Jimi Hendrix into the rock pantheon.
