Posted on March 5, 2020 by Sonoma Valley Sun

If love dogs but because you live in an apartment you aren’t allowed to have a large dog, you may want to consider a miniature or toy dog breed, otherwise known as lap dogs. You must have seen some of these dog breeds being carried about by your favorite celebrities. There are many reasons to love them!

Another advantage to having a lap dog is that many breeds don’t shed. This makes it ideal for people who are allergic to pollen and allergic to dog furs (as is often the case with people who suffer allergic reactions to pollen).

Here are some miniature dog breeds to consider:

Maltipoo

This is a crossbreed that is obtained by crossing Maltese and a Toy or Miniature Poodle hence the name Maltipoo (Maltese plus Poodle). An adult Maltipoo weighs around 10 pounds which makes them perfect for apartment dwellers. They are beautiful, and friendly, too. They are known to be very playful, loyal to their owners, friendly and are quite very patient and calm. However, like every mixed breed, they are quite prone to different allergies and health conditions, that is why you must ensure they are fed with the top quality dog foods. The good thing is that there are much top-quality Maltipoo dog feeds out there, to ensure you are buying the right one for your dog, you just have to read a full review.  Another great thing about Maltipoo is that they are non-shedders which makes them perfect people who are asthmatic and those who have allergy issues.

Pug

Of the many miniature dog breeds, a particularly popular one is the Pug. These breeds are quite friendly and are not overly heavy as the heaviest of this breed weighs around 25 pounds and the miniature ones, the ones fit for apartment dwellers, weigh just about 10 pounds. They are quite happy to remain indoors all day and to keep them constantly happy, you merely have to take them out for brief walks. Another plus is that they do not require too much grooming.

Poodle

Like most miniature dog breeds, poodle dog breeds weigh between 10-15 pounds. They come in toy and miniature sizes and are quite very friendly. Among all miniature/toy dog breeds we have, the poodle shed the least hence they are perfect for every apartment dweller as they do not require regular grooming.

The Italian Greyhound

This is a miniature version of the well known Greyhound dog breed. The Italian Greyhounds are perfect for homes as they are very loving, are not very heavy — they weigh 15 pounds on average and they are very loyal. Another big plus is that they have very smooth coats, which don’t need too much grooming.

Lhasa Apso

Just like the aforementioned Italian Greyhound breed, the Lhasa Apso is not that heavy, as they often weigh just about 15 pounds,  the perfect size for an apartment. They are very friendly and beautiful as well.

American Eskimo Dogs

Although some of this breed weigh as big as 35 pounds, there are the miniature ones that weigh about 15 pounds. The good thing about the Eskies is that they are quite especially to train. Unlike other breeds, you don’t have to worry about them destroying things in your apartment during their puppy stages. Eskies learn very fast and easily.

Cavalier King Charles

This breed is the one of the most friendly. These dogs are very social, look attention and they are beautiful to behold. The only issue is, to keep your Cavalier King Charles dog breed happy and in good health, you need to ensure you take him or her out on a walk every day.

The Schnauzer

Schnauzer breeds come both in miniature and standard sizes. The miniature ones are quite perfect for any apartment dweller. One of their greatest attributes is that they are quite protective of their owners but also very friendly. They, however, need to be constantly groomed.

The Welsh Corgi

This breed is quite heavy compared to the likes of the Italian Greyhound. They weigh around 22-25 pounds. They are also quite very popular among apartment dwellers. They have a stocky build and short tail. They are also very friendly but require regular exercise.

Aside from those already mentioned above, there are many miniature dog breeds out there that are perfect for apartment dwellers. The good thing about them is that they are quite easy — and affordable — to A good number of them are also non-shedders which make perfect for those who suffer from allergies and asthma.
