Sonoma Valley schools look to full ‘distance learning’ in fall

School District Superintendent Socorro Shiels will recommend to the board on July 21 a plan for online-only classes for the upcoming fall semester.

“Student learning, as well as the safety of all during the pandemic, are non-negotiable for Sonoma Valley Unified School District,” Shiels said in a letter posted today, dubbing the initiative Distance Learning 2.0.

Sheils said the plan moves from the emergency response of last semester to “an adaptive and strategic response” to the ongoing pandemic. Elements include:

  • Daily attendance will be taken
  • Defined daily instructional time with clear student schedules
  • Grade level assignments and assessments
  • Clear and frequent communication
  • Traditional grading and learning feedback
  • Care and attention to the social wellbeing of (every)  student

The Board will consider the recommendation on July 21, and may hold an additional meeting on July 28 to decide.

“We are diligently planning a more robust learning experience in the virtual world with Distance Learning 2.0,” Shiels said.

More details will follow as after a final decision is announced. In early August, parents will receive specific student schedules and calendars.

“We are working with community child care partners to identify and potentially increase space for child care providers,” Shiels said. “We will do everything we can to create safe and meaningful options for families and strengthen our community.”
