Sonoma County closes 13 daycare centers after new Covid outbreak

Sonoma County has temporarily closed 13 pre-school and home based-child care centers after a spike in Covid-19 cases among children, relatives, and staff.

“We have had 62 cases in child care settings or schools that provide daycare,” said Sonoma County Public Health Officer Dr. Sundari Mase. Of that total, 25 are children, 27 are family members, and 10 are child care workers.

The affected centers were not named, as per County policy

One facility had nearly half the cases, Mase said, all linked to one child. Overall, no hospitalizations have been required, and all patients are either still in quarantine or have recently finished, she said. The county is performing contact tracing.

“We’ve had one in the north county that had 30 cases as of September 15. Sixteen students. Looks like one of the students was the first case. That outbreak is ongoing,” she said.

Sonoma County is still in the purple, or worst, tier according to the state’s criteria for reopening.
