In praise of Saints

Posted on February 21, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Author Mary Lea Carroll will present her books, Saint Everywhere and Somehow Saints, at Readers’ Books on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 pm.

While visiting Siena, Italy, Mary Lea Carroll grew fascinated with the remarkable story of St. Catherine of Siena and made a resolution: Whenever she was lucky enough to travel, if a shrine dedicated to a female saint was nearby, she’d visit and learn about her. In Saint Everywhere, Carroll shares the stories of eight saints and her journeys to find them. In Somehow Saints, she continues her quests, this time also reflecting on her more-than-lively childhood.

From well known figures such as Our Lady of Guadalupe to the everyday people who embody saintly virtues in their actions, Carroll shares both Catholic history and modern inspiration. While the lives of Saints may seem distant, with interpretation and reflection, they can connect to the present in surprising ways. Through her travel narratives and her spiritual journey, Mary Lea Carrol has been able to make that connection in her charming books.

Carroll is a writer and world traveler whose Irish Catholic heritage probably goes back more than a thousand years. Mary Lea has worked in travel, theatre, and Hollywood before helping her husband build his business and raising their three daughters who are now adults. Mary Lea Carroll is a life-long resident of Pasadena, California, where she lives with her husband of more than thirty years.
