Ten years of Tokaj

Sonoma Mayor Jack Ding giving his Proclamation to Tom Blackwood, Buena Vista general manager

The Sonoma-Tokaj Sister City Committee celebrates a 10-year bond with the Hungarian city with an evening of food, wine and, of course, dance. The committee is to raise funds to bring Tokaj wine studies interns to work at wineries in Sonoma, and to send Sonoma interns to work at wineries in Tokaj.

This successful program has changed the lives of aspiring wine students from both countries, and has created many affectionate relationships between the two wine-centric sister cities, said Sylvia Toth, committee co-chair. “As a Hungarian who moved to America many years ago, it is wonderful to be able to help young people and forge relationships with our counterparts in Tokaj, as well as Hungarians in Sonoma and the Bay Area.”

The August 25 party was hosted by Buena Vista Winery, founded by Hungarian national Agoston Haraszthy, whose bronze bust looks on as members of Eszterlanc Hungarian Folkdance Ensemble perform the czardas.
