Designing 2023 — Margaret Hatcher’s ‘Seasonal Fantasies’

Posted on October 11, 2022 by Sonoma Valley Sun

It lasts a year, but it was 25 years in the making. Margaret Hatcher, who was the Special Projects Manager at Sonoma Community Center, has produced a gorgeous calendar for 2023 – each month a themed costume images carefully designed, crafted, and photographed. She calls it Seasonal Fantasies.

Her work at the SCC (from 2009 through 2018) included design and creation for the Trashion Fashion Show, and other events. She has designed costumes for dance productions, shadow plays, a video game, fashion shows, gallery installations, parades and public events.

The calendar shows off 25 years of her skills in beautiful detail.

“My overall process involved research, sketching ideas, procuring materials, construction, fitting on models, painting backdrops, setting up studio lights, and directing photo sessions and post production,” she said. “As a maker, I employed numerous techniques including sewing, pattern drafting, wig making, glove making, corset making, altering/upcycling shoes, beadwork and accessories.”

The calendar is on sale now at Readers’ Books in Sonoma, and online at Mhatchercostumes.com.

October 13 – 16, she will have a Calendar Series exhibit at the Alley Gallery in Sonoma, located behind the Sebastiani Theater in the alley just off the Sonoma Plaza. An artists reception will be held Saturday October 15 from 5-7pm.

The exhibit will feature large format prints of the Calendar images as well as pieces from the original costumes.
