Embracing Dunbar Elementary School: a tutor’s perspective

Posted on March 23, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

As volunteer tutors for Dunbar Elementary School, we visit the school each week providing individual students with reading support. Through our interactions at Dunbar we have a firsthand account of what an incredible school this is in the heart of Sonoma Valley. The love and dedication that the principal, faculty and supporting staff have for their students, the families and each other is apparent. A Dunbar student smile says it all!

Dunbar is one of the facilities that may be closed for the upcoming academic year by the Sonoma Valley Unified School District (SVUSD). Uprooting this educational community would be a disservice. The last
few years have been a challenge for our schools between the fires and the pandemic causing educational losses and instability. Dunbar is making strong educational progress, which we witness during our visits, creating a solid and consistent learning environment.

Dunbar School gives the students strength to stand, endure and restores their trust that there is a place that cares about them. Just when these children and their families feel safe, secure, and stable, they are threatened with the school closing. Dunbar deserves the right to remain open!
