Here’s how CalTrans would make Hwy 12/Verano intersection safer

Posted on June 16, 2023 by Sonoma Valley Sun

With its long crosswalks and commute-time traffic jams, Highway 12 and Verano Boulevard is one of the most dangerous intersections in Sonoma Valley. The site of numerous accidents over the years and three pedestrian deaths since 2020, CalTrans – the state agency responsible for highway safety – is responding to demands to make passage safer for pedestrians accessing a nearby shopping center, fast food outlets, two major bus stops, and Maxwell Park.

CalTrans and the Sonoma County Dept. of Public Infrastructure will hold a public meeting on Wednesday, June 21, at El Verano School, 18606 Riverside Drive, 6:30-8:30pm. Topic: pedestrian safety improvements proposed for the Verano Avenue/Highway 12 intersection and vicinity.

Supervisor Susan Gorin will speak to open the meeting, followed by a brief question and answer period. Then, staff will display maps of potential improvements, and answer questions and take public comment on the project.

Some of the improvements under consideration are improved over-street lighting; re-striping the roadway; removal of right-turn lanes; improve ‘Yield to Pedestrians’ signage; and programming an all-cars-stop street signal to allow pedestrians to cross in any direction.

Caltrans is seeking public input on the project. Caltrans staff will take note of comments made during the meeting whether verbally, or vis comment card.  However, the public may also leave comments via this webpage whether before or after the meeting.[email protected]
