SF’s former DA in Sonoma lecture

Former San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin discusses the future of the criminal justice system in a Sonoma appearance on August 6.

The in-person afternoon event is presented by the Praxis Peace Institute.

Boudin will assume the position of Executive Director of the newly-founded Criminal Law and Justice Center at UC Berkeley this fall. The purpose of the center is to shape criminal justice policy on a national scale through research and advocacy.

“I’m thrilled to join the nation’s premier public law school and engage with brilliant scholars and students to drive meaningful change by elevating the lived experience of those directly impacted,” he said.

As SF District Attorney, he eliminated cash bail, established a unit to re-evaluate wrongful convictions, and refused to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement with raids and arrests.  He also brought several cases against police officers for abusive behavior and supported laws that eliminated barriers to holding police accountable. Additionally, he compensated victims of police brutality.

The reforms were not well received by conservatives, and a recall campaign ended his two years in office. In his new role, he will advocate for transformative changes on a nation-wide stage.

Sunday, August 6. 1pm. Sonoma Community Center, 276 E. Napa St. $20-$25. Praxispeace.org
