Sonoma makes it ‘Plein’

The Sonoma Plein Air art show comes to town September 11-16 and not one of the 30-plus featured painters has even picked up a brush yet. But no worries. The art is out there, waiting to be put to canvas.

For the annual event, professional artists come from across the country for a week of painting outdoors, “en plein air.” You’ll see them at their easels in vineyards, around town,  in parks — any landscape that might engage their imagination.

The public is invited to watch the artists paint and to purchase the works at two events. Tuesday, September 12, 5-7pm is the Quick Draw event. Artists paint “on the clock” on Sonoma Plaza, then the finished works are displayed and sold right afterwards.

Saturday, September 16, 10am – 4pm, is the big Art Show & Sale of all the works created that week. The outdoor exhibit, also on Sonoma Plaza, includes artist demos, live music and free, fun art activities for children. The sale of art supports the artists and raises money for the Sonoma Plein Air Foundation, a major supporter of arts programs in local schools. Sonomapleinair.com.
