‘Different Worlds’ at SV Museum

Posted on January 8, 2024 by Sonoma Valley Sun

Tsherin Sherpa: Different Worlds presents the captivating artworks of Tsherin Sherpa, a renowned contemporary artist born in Kathmandu, Nepal. He  emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998. His work is influenced by his personal experiences within the Himalayan Diaspora, his rigorous training as a thangka painter (traditional Buddhist art), and time in the U.S.

“Growing up in Nepal, I was immersed in Buddhist culture and iconography,” he said. “Even though I was not a monk, I studied Buddhist scriptures in a nearby monastery.  So, alongside the traditional art, I was seeped in the meaning of it.

As for the process of learning thangka painting, “the basics took me about 5 years then I continued perfecting my skills for many years. Only in the last few years did I begin experimenting in contemporary forms.”

The result is a distinctive artistic blend of cultural heritage and contemporary perspectives. The exhibition opens at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art on January 20.

“Tsherin Sherpa’s work is an extraordinary synthesis of traditional Himalayan culture and practices, and cutting-edge contemporary art, which makes for a unique and inspiring exhibition. His work bridges continents and cultures,” says Linda Keaton, executive director. “We hope the Bay Area community enjoys this very special opportunity to experience the work of this globally renowned artist.”

There will be an Exhibition Reception on Saturday, January 27, 5-7pm. The event is free for SVMA members, and $10 for non-members. Register at https://svma.charityproud.org/
